Urban landscapes, where various historical legacies are inscribed, reveal complex layers of memory through architecture and built space. In Alexandria, the city’s fabric holds echoes of its storied past, from Ptolemaic and Ottoman era buildings to modern constructions reshaping the skyline. These overlapping influences embody both continuity and rupture as new edifeces emerge among historical remnants.  This reverberates beyond architecture, shaping cultural narratives and public perception. Michael Haag’s book Alexandria: City of Memory portrays the city as an archive where past eras silently converse with modernity, blending imperial grandeur with today’s urban reality. Haag’s narrative explores the palimpsest of Alexandria’s streets and architecture, capturing how past dominions still echo in the attitudes, stories, and daily practices of its residents.

Various historical legacies are inscribed in urban landscapes, whose architecture and built spaces embody complex layers of memory. The urban fabric of Alexandria, for example, echoes the city’s storied past, from Ptolemaic- and Ottoman-era buildings to twentieth-century modernist constructions that reshaped the skyline. These overlapping histories signal both continuity and rupture, with new edifices continually emerging among the remnants of previous periods.

These dynamics extend beyond architecture, encompassing cultural narratives and public perception too. In his book Alexandria: City of Memory, Michael Haag portrays the eponymous city as an archive in which past eras silently converse with modernity, blending Alexandria’s former imperial grandeur with contemporary urban reality. By delving into the palimpsest of Alexandria’s streets and architecture, Haag’s narrative captures the ways in which past empires still echo in its residents’ attitudes, stories, and daily practices.

English Academic Editing made my article and funding proposal (which succeeded) pleasant to read, and tried to grasp what I struggled to put into words. They definitely contributed to the article's acceptance and proposal's success.
